So far, the has reported 11,054 caseds and 17 deaths in theUnited States. Of those, 547 confirmefd and probable cases and four deathsw arein Arizona. That compareas with 10,053 cases and 17 deaths on June 1and 8,97t5 cases and 15 deaths on May 29. New York and Arizonaa are tied with the highestr numberof deaths, followed by threew in Illinois and Texas and one each in Utah and Washington. The World Health Organizationjreports 19,273 cases and 117 deaths in 66 including the U.S. The CDC continues to take aggressivew action to reduce the spread and severityt ofthe illness.
It originally was calledr the swine flu because laboratory tests had shown that many of the genesx in the new virus were similar to influenz viruses that normally occur in pigs in North America. But further study has shownh that the new virus is different from what normallyy circulates in NorthAmerican pigs, so it is now bein called the H1N1 flu. Health officialsx recommend frequent hand washing with soapand water, as well as avoidingy touching the eyes, nose or mouth. Sick employees are encouraged to stay home to reduces the spread ofthe flu.
