Johnson Controls Inc., a Fortune 500 company that is a nationapl leader in energy management andefficiencyh practices, hired the Brookfield contracting firm as constructiom manager for its $73 million, 413,000-square-foot greejn makeover and expansion of the company’s headquarters Hunzinger gutted and rebuilt three existing buildingds at the Johnson Controls headquarters and constructed two buildings — a 94,700-square-foot Power Solutions headquarters and a 29,700-square-foof annex that includes a cafe’, meetinf rooms and fitness center.
Hunzinger’ss list of green features for the Johnson Controls campusincludes high-efficiency light fixtures, increasex in the use of natural light with more windows and and a biofiltration system that collectss runoff through permeable pavement. The runoff will be used as water forflushing toilets, whichu will save about 360,000o gallons of water a The Power Solutions buildings also have a solarr thermal roof and there is a 400-kilovolt-ampers solar array on the corporater grounds that takes up more than 31,00o square feet.
The buildings also use geothermal heatingf and cooling systems that circulat water from 272 wells that reduce operating costs by 29 percent in the winter and 57 percengt inthe summer. A new parkinbg structure will include stallxfor “plug and vehicles of the future. “We’ll be shocked if we don’gt receive a platinum rating,” said Jenny Guslick, a spokeswoman for “This project will also look very good onour resume.” Hunzinger’xs field expertise in green building is further supportede by the construction firm’s dedicatiom to continuing education.
“Hunzinger Construction University” features a curriculuk that helps engineers, architects and other constructio n professionals obtaintheir LEED-accredited professional certificates. The university is designede forthe company’s professional staff, but allow other companies to send employees to the continuingh education venue. Frank a Hunzinger business development specialist, said 150 peoplee have attendedthe month-long, one-day-a-week LEED program and 75 have received LEED-accredited professional certification. There are 40 Hunzinger employeesw who received theLEED certification.
“Hunzingee has prepared a quality presentation on how the constructio company and its process has an impactf onsustainable design,” said Ursula an architect and principal at Continuum Architects, who has had eighy of her employees attend Hunzingerd Construction University.
