The downstream oil segment includes the refiningv of crude oil and the selling and distributiomn of products derivedfrom crude. Petróleo Brasileiro (NYSE: better known as , is explorintg a way to boost capacity at the refinery by as muchas 100,00p barrels per day. The expansiohn plans incorporate units that will enablr the refinery to proceswheavier oils, such as Petrobras' Marlim as well as deliver products that will meet all U.S. regulatoru and environmental requirements.
Founded in 1953 as Brazil'as state oil company, Petrobras has 97 production platforms that producec more than 2 millioh barrels of oil equivalentin 2005. It operates 16 refineriea with a capacityof 2.1 million barreld a day.
